Is prenatal massage safe during pregnancy?

Not so long ago, according to many doctors, therapists and even specialised textbooks, pregnancy was considered a contraindication to massage.

Fortunately, a lot has changed since then. A number of studies, positive feedback from physiotherapists and, above all, the visible beneficial effects of the therapy on mothers-to-be, have meant that a properly performed prenatal massage clearly improves the mental and physical state of pregnant women.

What is prenatal massage really ?

It is a treatment that differs little from a classic massage in terms of the techniques used. Of course, the course of the therapy itself is slightly different, if only because of the positioning of the women. It should be remembered, however, that the comfort and safety of women is the most important thing during a massage. Comfortable cushions, pads, half-shafts, extra blankets to cover hands and feet are basic accessories that will certainly be needed. Other factors responsible for the comfort and quality of this therapy include well-chosen, relaxing music, a very delicate, non-irritating fragrance floating in the air, as well as natural, safe cosmetics on which the massage will be performed.

COURSE OF TREATMENT

Please note that at Quadrille Spa we only perform prenatal massage in the second trimester of pregnancy and only with the written consent of the attending gynaecologist.

The second trimester of pregnancy is the safest time when it comes to performing prenatal procedures. The first two to three months of pregnancy are a sensitive period due to the formation of the placenta, as well as organogenesis, the process of formation and development of the organs. The last weeks of pregnancy, on the other hand, should be dedicated to total relaxation, the foetus is already very developed, so all massages should be withheld until postnatal recovery.

The appointment begins with a thorough interview and the completion of a consultation card with the mother-to-be. Her well-being on the day of the scheduled procedure is very important. During the treatment, the pregnant woman assumes the position of lying on her back, as well as on her left and right side. The therapist focuses primarily on areas such as the lower and upper limbs, back, neck, shoulders and abdominal integuments. It is recommended that the prenatal massage techniques, their strength and frequency are selected individually to the patient, only then will the therapy have the desired effect.

Sometimes, during the treatment, a woman may feel discomfort. The reason may be that the smell in the room is too strong, the temperature too high or that the surgery is too dark. Often, the bad feeling is also related to the fact that the patient is undergoing this type of service for the first time in her life. This situation should not be underestimated and it is essential to discontinue the massage if the pregnant woman's condition does not improve.

What are the contraindications to prenatal massage ?

As with any massage, there are several contraindications to this treatment, including :

- high or very low blood pressure,
- pathological states of pregnancy,
- fetal malformations,
- pregnancy at risk,
- genital tract bleeding,
- threatened premature birth,
- Multifetal pregnancy - in this case, additional medical approval is needed,
- gestosis (pregnancy poisoning).

Why go for Prenatal Massage ?

There are many problems faced by mothers-to-be. Back pain, swelling of the lower limbs, weakened physical condition, weight gain and many others. Of course, these are natural processes in the body, resulting, for example, from changes in the hormonal system.

Benefits of pregnancy (prenatal) massage clinically documented :

- relieving pain and any tension in skeletal muscles,
- reducing swelling,
- beneficial effects on the endocrine, digestive, respiratory, circulatory and excretory systems,
- stress reduction and a positive effect on the physical and mental state of the mother-to-be,
- Reducing pain in the postpartum period,
- Positive effect on the skin's revitalisation processes, excellent prevention of stretch marks,
- increase body flexibility and range of movement,
- improving physical fitness,
- alleviating pain during childbirth.

Pregnant women definitely need quiet and relaxation. In order to prepare well for the birth and to maintain inner peace, prenatal treatments will undoubtedly be a hit.
