Michelin: A history steeped in tradition and authority

Although today's name Michelin is mainly associated with the prestigious stars awarded to restaurants, the history of this organisation dates back to the late 19th century. Brothers André and Édouard Michelin, the founders of the famous tyre brand, created in 1900 the first Michelin Guide, to help drivers discover France – highlighting not only the best routes but also places worth stopping for a meal or an overnight stay.

Over the years, the guide has gained immense importance in the world of gastronomy and travel. In 2023, a new category of awards, “Michelin Keys”– dedicated to unique hotels. Keys symbolise what is most important in travel: Authenticity, character, and an unforgettable guest experience.

First time in Poland

Year 2025 made its mark on the history of Polish hospitality – for the first time, Michelin inspectors awarded Keys to establishments in in our country. A total of 12 hotels, which are distinguished by their architecture, service, authenticity, and unique guest experience.
This prestigious circle also included Hotel Quadrille, awarded two Michelin stars, which confirms its exceptional character and the highest standard of service.

A New Era in Hospitality – The Michelin Key Philosophy

With the introduction of the Michelin Keys, the guide has, for the first time, extended its legendary penilaian methodology from restaurants to hotels.
Since 2023, Michelin inspectors have been evaluating accommodation establishments according to the same principles that have built trust in the Red Guide for over a century – with complete independence, anonymity, and rigour.

Every hotel selected for the Michelin Guide is assessed according to five universal criteria, which apply regardless of the establishment's location or style:

1. A hotel as an open door to a destination - the building should capture the spirit of the place and be part of its history and culture.
2. The Excellence of Architecture and Design – interiors, space and details must create a coherent, thoughtful whole.
3. Quality and consistency in service and comfort – service should provide full professionalism, warmth and harmony in contact with the guest.
4. Cohesion between experience and value Every element of the stay must confirm that the standard offered is adequate to the value the hotel represents.
5. The personality and authenticity of a place – The hotel must have a unique character and vision that gives it soul.

These are the elements that decide the awarding of Michelin keys.
